What You Get

More Than Just a Number of Years

Most age gap calculators stop at years. This one goes to the day — and tells you what that gap actually means.

Exact Gap — Years, Months & Days

Not “about 5 years.” The exact age difference to the day — because a gap of 4 years and 11 months is not the same thing as 5 years, and this calculator knows the difference.

Total Days, Weeks & Months Between

See the gap expressed as total days, total weeks, and total months too. Useful for insurance, legal documents, and anyone who needs the gap in a single unit rather than broken up.

Half-Your-Age-Plus-Seven Rule

The classic social rule of thumb for romantic age gaps — calculated automatically for both people. Shown clearly in the result panel without requiring any extra input from you.

Works for Any Two People

Partners, siblings, parent and child, friends, historical figures — anyone with a birth date. The calculator determines who’s older automatically. No extra step required.

Leap-Year Accurate

Every February 29th in both lifetimes is accounted for. The day count is exact — not an estimate based on 365.25. The same precision used in the chronological age calculators trusted by SLPs.

No App, No Login, No Waiting

Works on every device. Phone, tablet, laptop. Two inputs, one click, instant answer. Nothing to download, no account to create, no email required.

How It Works

Four Steps. Under Thirty Seconds.

Two dates in, one exact answer out. No spreadsheet, no subtraction by hand.

1

Enter Person 1’s Birthday

Select month, day, and year for the first person. Works for any birth date from 1900 to today.

2

Enter Person 2’s Birthday

Select month, day, and year for the second person. Doesn’t matter which is older — we figure that out for you.

3

Click Calculate

The calculator subtracts both dates, accounting for leap years, varying month lengths, and which person is the elder.

Age Gap Reference

What Different Age Gaps Actually Look Like

Context matters. A 5-year gap between 20-year-olds feels wider than the same gap between 50-year-olds. Here’s what the research says.

Age GapHow CommonTypical ContextPrevalence
0–1 yearVery CommonSchool cohort, close siblings~25% of couples
1–3 yearsMost CommonStandard sibling gap, most couples~35% of couples
3–5 yearsCommonNoticeable, different school years~20% of couples
5–10 yearsNotableDifferent life stages possible~13% of couples
10–15 yearsWideDifferent generations, references~5% of couples
15–20 yearsLargeMajor life stage difference~2% of couples
20+ yearsVery LargeNearly a generation apart<1% of couples

The average age gap between couples in the US, UK, and Australia consistently sits at 2–3 years, with the man typically being older in heterosexual relationships. But averages don’t tell you much about any specific pair.

What actually matters is where you both are in life. A 7-year gap when one person is 22 and the other is 29 spans a major developmental divide — finishing school versus establishing a career. That same gap at 45 and 52 is almost invisible in practice.

Age difference between siblings is a separate and common use case. The average sibling age gap is 2–3 years. Gaps under a year produce what some families call “Irish twins.” Gaps over 5 years often mean the children grow up feeling more like only children than siblings.

For parent-child age gaps, the calculator shows the parent’s exact age on the day the child was born — which many find more meaningful than a simple year subtraction.

Small, Notable, or Wide?

Small, Notable, or Wide?

The same age difference doesn’t mean the same thing at 25 as it does at 45. Here’s a practical lens for each size bracket.

0–4 Years

Small Gap

Barely registers in day-to-day life for most people. Shared cultural references, broadly similar life stages. The most common range for couples and close siblings. Neither person has a significantly different generational identity. A 2-year gap is what most people don’t even consciously think of as a “gap” at all.

5–9 Years

Notable Gap

Noticeable but very manageable for most adults. Different school years, possibly different memories of the same era. In your 20s, this gap can put two people at genuinely different life stages — one settled, one still exploring. In your 30s and beyond, it almost disappears. About 13% of couples sit in this range.

10+ Years

Wide Gap

A full generational shift in cultural experience. Ten-year gaps are common enough that they’re not unusual — but they do tend to come with differences in energy, life priorities, and long-term planning horizons. What the gap means depends almost entirely on the specific ages involved, not the gap size alone.

Dating Age Rule

The Half-Your-Age-Plus-Seven Rule — Explained

It started as a joke in 19th-century France. By the 20th century it had become a social convention — and somehow it stuck. Take your age, divide by 2, add 7. That’s your lower limit. The result is the youngest age most people would consider socially acceptable for you to date.

The upper end runs in reverse: subtract 7, then double. So at 36, your range runs from 25 up to 58. The older you get, the wider that band stretches.

The rule has real limitations. It says nothing about compatibility, life stage alignment, or shared values. And it applies only to adults — it breaks down entirely below age 18.

That said — it persists because it encodes something real. Very large age gaps between young adults can involve an asymmetry of life experience that creates genuine power imbalances.

Our chronological age calculator is the clinical tool used by SLPs, OTs, and psychologists. This page is firmly for the general-use case. For premature infants where corrected age matters more than chronological age, see the corrected age calculator (coming soon).

THE FORMULA
Minimum Age Partner
(Your Age ÷ 2) + 7
Age 40 → (40÷2)+7 = 27
Maximum Age Partner
(Your Age − 7) × 2
Age 40 → (40−7)×2 = 66
Age 25 Range: 19–36
Age 30 Range: 22–46
Age 40 Range: 27–66
Age 50 Range: 32–86
Age 60 Range: 37–106

Age Difference — and Why It’s More Complex Than It Looks

How to Calculate the Age Difference Between Two People

Subtract one birth year from the other. Done — except that only gets you an approximation, off by up to a year depending on where each birthday falls in the calendar. The exact age difference requires working in years, months, and days simultaneously, borrowing across columns just like you’d do for subtraction by hand.

The calculator above handles this automatically. But if you want to do it manually: line up both dates, subtract days first, then months (borrowing from years if needed), then years. The result in Y/M/D format is your precise age gap — the same method used when calculating chronological age for standardized assessments. For the clinical version with SLP semicolon format output, see the chronological age calculator.

Age Difference in Relationships

Research on age gaps in relationships consistently finds that relationship satisfaction is not strongly predicted by age difference alone. A meta-analysis of Western couple data shows smaller gaps (under 5 years) are slightly associated with higher reported satisfaction, but the effect size is small — dwarfed by factors like communication, shared values, and life stage alignment.

What actually causes friction in age-gap relationships is rarely the number — it’s where each person is in life. A 28-year-old and a 38-year-old might have completely different answers to ‘Do you want kids soon?’ Not because of the gap, but because of where their ages have put them. Our age difference calculator gives you the exact number — in years, months, and days, down to the day — and shows the compatible age range for each person automatically. What you do with that number is a different conversation entirely.

Age Difference Between Siblings

The average sibling gap in the US is 2.5 years — close enough that most siblings share a bedroom phase, school overlap, and the same cultural touchstones growing up. Under 12 months and some families call them ‘Irish twins.’ Uncommon, but not rare.

Gaps above 5–6 years tend to produce more independent sibling experiences. The older child may feel more like a de facto older cousin than a sibling — old enough to remember the household before the younger one arrived, old enough to have left for college by the time the younger one enters adolescence. Neither pattern is better or worse. They’re just different childhoods.

Age Difference in Parent-Child Context

For parent-child age gaps, the number that actually means something isn’t the gap today — it’s how old the parent was when the child was born. First-time mothers in the US average around 27; fathers, around 31. Both numbers have been climbing since the 1970s. A parent who had their child at 40 will be 58 on their kid’s 18th birthday — a very different dynamic than one who started at 25.

This age difference calculator shows the exact gap between any two birthdates — so if you enter a parent and child’s dates, you immediately see how old the parent was when the child was born. It also links through to the corrected age calculator (coming soon) for parents of premature infants — where chronological age and corrected (adjusted) age diverge, and the difference matters for developmental milestone tracking.

Age Difference: Chronological vs Biological

The gap this age difference calculator measures is always chronological — raw calendar time between two birth dates. It doesn’t change. Biological age is a different thing entirely — how old your body actually behaves, based on markers like telomere length, cardiovascular health, and metabolic function. Two people can have the same chronological gap and wildly different biological ones.

This calculator gives you the number on the birth certificate. Biological age requires a blood panel, not a birthday. Two people with a 15-year gap might feel the same age — or a 2-year gap might feel like a decade. That’s biology. This is the calendar.

Common Questions

Age Difference Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

Age gaps, what they actually mean, and yes — the half-your-age-plus-seven rule, explained properly.

Put in both birthdates, hit Calculate Age Difference button. The exact gap comes back in years, months, and days — plus total days, weeks, and months between the two birthdays. Doesn’t matter which date you enter first.

It’s a social rule of thumb, not a law. Take your age, halve it, throw 7 on top — that’s your lower limit. Want the upper? Flip it: knock 7 off your age first, then double what’s left. At 40, that lands you somewhere between 27 and 66, which is a pretty wide window if you think about it. Our calculator quietly runs both numbers for you — no extra input needed.

It really depends on how old both people are. At 22 and 32, a 10-year gap can feel like a lot — you’re just at very different points in life. But that same gap at 45 and 55 hardly matters to anyone. The older you both are, the less a 10 year difference actually means. For most adults, the half-plus-seven rule puts a 10 year gap well within the normal range anyway.

Around 2–3 years, consistently across the US, UK, and Australia. In heterosexual couples, the man is typically older. About 35% of couples sit in the 1–3 year range, and another 25% have a gap under a year. Gaps of 5–10 years cover roughly 13% of couples. Above 10 years — under 5%. These figures come largely from Pew Research Center studies on marriage and relationships in the US.

Put in both siblings’ birthdates and hit Calculate. Exact gap, years, months, and days. Around 2.5 years is the US average. Under 12 months — some families call that ‘Irish twins.’ Above 5–6 years and the two kids often grow up in almost entirely separate worlds.

Yes — enter the parent’s birthdate as Person 1 and the child’s as Person 2. Since the child was 0 on the day they were born, the age gap is exactly how old the parent was at that moment. For premature infants, see our Corrected Age Calculator (coming soon) — where chronological age and adjusted age diverge.

Nothing meaningful — they’re the same thing. Age difference and age gap are used interchangeably to describe the amount of time between two people’s dates of birth. The calculation is identical regardless of which term you prefer.

No — and it shouldn’t be applied there. The rule was built for adults and falls apart completely below 18. Legal age of consent varies by jurisdiction and overrides any social formula. This calculator suppresses the dating rule entirely when either person entered is under 18.
