How to Calculate How Old You Are — and Why It’s Trickier Than It Looks
Subtract your birth year from this year. Simple — until the calendar pushes back. Someone born December 15, 1994 isn’t 32 on January 1, 2026. They’re still 31 until December 15th arrives. The year math is right. The age is wrong. This is exactly why a dedicated calculator exists. It handles that one tricky adjustment automatically, every time.
The right-to-left subtraction method sounds simple enough. Start with days, move to months, then years. But months have different lengths — February alone has 28 days most years and 29 in a leap year. Every borrow depends on knowing the length of the month before it. That’s the calculation running invisibly behind every click here.
The Leap Year Problem
A leap year adds one day every four years — with exceptions. Divisible by 4? Leap year. Century year like 1900 or 2100? Only a leap year if also divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year. 1900 was not. For most age calculations this doesn’t change the years, months, or days result. It matters when counting total days lived — and that’s why this calculator doesn’t round. Total days are exact.
When Exact Age Really Matters
For most things, the year alone is enough. But there are situations where the day is what counts. Passport and visa applications want your age at the time of travel, not today. School enrollment hinges on whether your birthday falls before or after a cut-off date. Insurance premiums can flip on your exact birthday — same month, wrong day, different rate. And medical reference ranges, particularly pediatric dosing guides and growth charts, are expressed in months of age for children under two.
A Note on Corrected Age for Premature Infants
For premature infants, standard age from the birth date alone doesn’t tell the full story. Pediatricians — and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) — may also refer to corrected age — also called adjusted age — which accounts for how many weeks early a baby was born. A baby born eight weeks early who is now six months old by the calendar may be closer to four months developmentally. This is a reference figure, not a diagnosis. Always discuss your baby’s development with your pediatrician. Our Corrected Age Calculator (coming soon) provides the adjusted age figure your doctor may ask about.
How Other Cultures Count Age
Not every country uses the same system. The standard Western method counts from zero at birth. The traditional Korean age system works differently — everyone is considered 1 year old at birth and gains another year every January 1st, not on their actual birthday. Someone born in December 2000 would have been considered “2” by January 2001. South Korea officially moved to the Western system for legal purposes in 2023, but traditional Korean age remains culturally common. Our full age calculator includes Korean age alongside Western age.
Chronological Age vs Biological Age
This calculator measures chronological age — the fixed, objective time elapsed since your date of birth. It cannot be changed. Biological age refers to how old your body appears based on physiological markers like fitness level and cell health — and it can be improved with lifestyle choices. In everyday speech and in all legal or administrative contexts, age means chronological age. For speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and occupational therapists (OTs) running standardized assessments, chronological age is the number — not developmental age, not corrected age. Just the calendar. Need the exact Y;M;D format for a standardized assessment? Use our Chronological Age Calculator.
